Seek & Find or I Spy Cloth Book

Had so much fun going through my novelty scraps and fussy cutting for this cloth book made for a baby shower.
If you can put together a 9 patch, you can make this cloth book.
I got this idea from "Quarter Inch from the Edge."  She made a great book of colors.
As a retired elementary teacher, I loved the open ended activities you could use with the book. So I took it a step further and looked for other things that could be found or matched. That observation skill is necessary for reading and other content areas.
This book can be used by an infant being exposed to bright colors through Kindergarten with various activities.  See the last page of the book below for ideas.

Fussy cut & lay out pages providing for lots of matching & finding.
A 9 patch and busy fabric were placed right sides together,
turned right side out and edge stitched.
After I made several pages including one of velvets & corduroy for sensory reasons,
I realized over at "Quarter Inch" she made her "pages" 6x3.
If I had made the pages 6x3,
I could have stitched down the center to bind the book.
Instead, I made 2 button holes on each page.

Reused jeans for the cover of the book.
The seam becomes the spine of the book.
 Trimmed to fit pages.
Appliqued a fussy cut and lined with a busy fabric.
Added button holes to front and back.
Used a shoe string to bind the cover and pages.
This means you could add more pages or change out a page.

Busy fabrics were used on the back of the 9 patch pieces.

The last page includes ideas to "Find & Seek" or "I Spy."
I decided embroidering words would take too long.
If Mommy or someone thinks of more things to seek & find,
they can write them down.
I had so much fun making this little book
for a couple of little twin boys.
I didn't have to buy a thing to make this book.
All of the fabrics and shoestring came from my stash.

The pieces for my 9 patch were 2½ inch squares
which created 6x6 inch pages.

  2. Thanks for the shout out! I love the button hole idea (but would never attempt it... I suck at making them). Hope the twinners enjoy it!

  3. This is such a great gift idea for almost anyone as you could make it a memory book for an older person using pictures printed on fabric. Love what you created.

  9. What a fabulous idea for a busy book, Joy. The twins and their parents will be able to find and talk about different things each time they look at it. Love the denim cover, too.
