Mail carriers deserve medals for dealing with all the different weather that gets thrown at them. Mind you, at the moment we're viewing ours with a degree of skepticism because after they were legislated back to work you'd think the mail would be moving a whole lot faster than what it is. Sadly such is not the case and one wonders why.
Your wonders could be answered different ways. The postal service here is constantly begging people to apply for a job. However, because the benefits have been severely messed up by the government, people don't want to apply. The people still hanging around just have a bit invested. However, many have to quit because working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week wears down a person's physical health. Tricks are used as in cutting back a route so they are supposed to get their route delivered in less than 8 hours (not counting time at PO sorting) and told they'll hire 20 more people, but because their route is lowered, their pay is also cut. Problem is, the positions aren't being filled. Then they tell the carrier, you have to continue carrying the old route at your cut pay and because we don't have enough substitutes you have to carry your day off! Then Amazon pours on their pay load because the USPS will deliver it cheaper in the rural areas and Amazon keeps the savings. So, maybe your carriers went back because they got better pay, but still no help has occurred to help their massive pay load caused by so many more people ordering packages these days?
