Large zipper bag to hold project
Marker and large piece of paper for recording. 



Objectives-
*The student will be able to identify & discuss characteristics of Dementia, Alzheirmer, ADD and other conditions & people (to include babies) with emphasis on fidgeting and the need to use hands, eyes and mind.
*The student will be able to identify & discuss a Fidget Quilt and the need for them.
*The student will be able to analyze the needed sturdy construction for Fidget Quilts.
*The student will be able to analyze the visual, tactile and mind work challenges required of a Fidget Quilt.
*The student will be able to identify the spool pin, threading guides, thread take up or lifter, bobbin winder, bobbin, bobbin case, foot, feed dogs, foot pedal, hand wheel, stitch & width regulator and stitch selection button.
*The student will be able to wind a bobbin.
*The student will be able to thread the machine both top and bobbin.

Students can work in small groups with their computers to research the following resources for answers to the following questions.
B. What are some symptoms common with Dementia, Alzheimer, and ADD conditions?

C. What is a Fidget Quilt?

Lead a class discussion for the following question and write a list on poster paper. (I'll use freezer paper.)
 D. What are some rules to follow when designing the fidget quilt?
     1. Everything has to be tightly secure & sturdy.
     2. Colorful
     3. Lots of tactical pieces
     4. Things to promote thoughts and memories
     5. Things that promote thinking. How does this work, why isn't it working, how are these different?
     6. ?
E. Encourage students to write down ideas. Also encourage students to find pieces at home that could be used. Possibly from old clothing?
 
Using the sewing machine
F. Sewing machine parts: Provide each student with their preassessment papers from day 1 and answer keys. Note these will be assessed again on last day of class.
G. Demonstrate how to thread a machine. (Since everyone has a bobbin the show how to wind a bobbin at a later time.) Show how to sew on scraps of fabric. Use remaining class time to set up, thread machine and practice controlling machine by sewing on scraps of fabric. Put away machine and supplies.
 H. Provide copies of "Rules for Using the Sewing Machine." (Internet link for this resource was lost. I hope to find the author of this piece.)
