Using Geometry to Create a Perfect Squared Cardboard Template

Lay ruler along edge of paper.
If measurement of ruler starts at the end, lay end of ruler along other side of paper.

Measure and mark at least 3 spots along each side.
Connect the marks along straight edge of ruler.
Draw lines until they intersect.

To check measurement and to make sure the corner is a right angle,
Fold on the diagonal and compare the sides and corner.
Check measurement both ways.
This shows a 4½ inch block
with a quarter inch seam marked.

Cut out square and trace on cardboard such as a cereal box,
to make a template.
