Getting Our Kicks~ Route 66 Vaca ~ Day 19~ Making a Bee Line

Ellis, KS to Columbia, MO
Just outside of Ellis, was so happy to see green again that didn't have to be irrigated.

Stopped in Salina, KS to check out "The Quilting Bee."

Bought a triangle quilting ruler as my souvenir.
Don't know why I didn't take pictures of the main street.
This was not a dead town.  It appeared no mall had come to kill this busy street.
All the stores, including a Dollar General were very busy.
The Yarn Store declared to be the "second friendliest yarn store in the world."
It was a couple of stores down the street, but I didn't go ask why.
Finally started getting into hills and trees in their peak of color.
Pulled off the highway to make a detour through Lawrence and had a beautiful drive.
Then traffic got crazy in Topeka and Kansas City, KS & MO.
Yep, when you look at the map, our ride home tomorrow is just about as the crow flies.

Getting Our Kicks~ Route 66 Vaca ~ Day 18~Counting Miles

Georgetown, CO to Ellis, KS
We were supposed to have a 30% chance of snow.  It was falling when we went to bed, but we had a cozy fire.
We woke up to a fluffy, wet 3 or 4 inch snow. Checking the weather told us it would be well above freezing by noon which gave us more time to eat and chat.
So by noon we left my cousin's beautiful home.
Of course, upon my cousin's recommendation, we checked out downtown (which we would have anyway). It was a hard choice deciding on pictures of this VERY colorful town.  It seems they challenge the white snow with their colorful buildings.  I'm actually now glad I got to see this place with snow.

What a wonderful idea for dead Jack-0-Lanterns after Halloween, a Pumpkin Smash!

Now which picture would you not have post?  It's a gorgeous place.
Back on the Interstate East 70 and down the road a few miles is Idaho Springs, CO

~
Stopped in Denver, CO to add to our list of  "Visits to Pro Football Stadiums."

~
Then basically started counting miles toward home as there was not much to see but open farmland through eastern Colorado and western Kansas.
In Colorado you could see forever.  I wondered how many miles to that far ridge.
Then Kansas ended the day with an unusual cloud configuration in the South.

Getting Our Kicks~ Route 66 Vaca ~ Day 17~ Santa Fee Rt. 66 & Georgetown, CO

Albuquerque, NM to Georgetown, CO
A very long ride today so we could beat some weather.
First, some more beautiful shots of Albuquerque's beautiful landscaping on their Interstate system.

North to Santa Fe to check out the Pre 1937 Route 66
Down town old Santa Fe, NM

US bank moved into an old gas station?
New restaurants are built in adobe style.
New Mexico State Capital.
Couldn't get a clear picture for all the beautiful trees.
~
Then northward toward Denver, CO

A variety of grass lands and mountains.
You tell me what they are.  Had seen them before in other states on this trip.
Crossed the state line and immediately saw evidence of old forest fires in Colorado.
Didn't get to Denver until dusk and too much fog didn't allow me to catch the sky line of Denver.
As we headed west on Interstate 70 from Denver we started to become concerned when we saw the trees and vegetation covered with fog ice.  The mountains seemed to begin to swallow us.
However, making it to my cousin's home in Georgetown was worth it all.  She used to run a Bed-n-Breakfast.  We had a beautiful, warm and comfortable room.
After a short rest and some re-hydration, we were treated to a delicious supper and great conversation.
