Tues Tutorial~ Jelly Roll Race Type Hot Pad

Been spending most of winter using up the bottomless pit of scraps.  Like the Christmas bag and pillow made recently, this uses the Jelly Roll Race type method to put strips together randomly. I had used this method for squares back before the Jelly Roll people mentioned it. It was the very first quilt I posted on this blog.
Here's a picture only tutorial for this little hot pad.

  1. What did you use as the padding? My mother uses old cut up ironing board pads (which are heat safe) or just scraps of other fabrics.

    1. Good question! I had been using pieces of scrap batting I stitched together. At first one layer, but quickly determined it had to be 2 layers. Then I had bought at a yard sale about 6 years ago this factory type roll of some kind of mint green matting. From the research I've done, I think its something used for upholstery. It's not anything like batting or flannel, but some kind of man made product that I thought would be plastic like and never knew what I could use it for. Then one day I put 1, then 2 layers between fabric and tested with the hottest iron setting as long as I could without burning the fabric. It did not melt! Also, not a whole lot of heat transferred through the piece. Most of all, unlike batting, it bounced back.
I've had people try to be the hot pad police for these and the bowl holders saying I must use the batting made for heat products. My response is, "What do you think we used before it came on the market?" Yes, we used old worn out ironing board covers which were too expensive to buy brand new, old towels with holes, and layers of fabric. After all, how many times have we grabbed a towel to pick up a pot handle or hot dish? Your Mother was resourceful.

  2. The finished product reminds me of a cityscape. Well done!
