Tues Tutorial~ VBS 3-Legged Race Sacks

Funny how some things work out.

Our church Vacation Bible School Leader
wanted to have a 3-legged sack race.

So she brought me some
loosely woven burlap/sack cloth she had ordered.
Both of us sew a lot,
and really thought this fabric wouldn't hold up in a 3-legged race.
So, my gut told me to put off making them.
This was 2 months before our June 28 VBS.

Then we had visitors come to our church.
They had once lived in our town,
but had moved away
continuing to keep a storage unit here.

In the process of cleaning it out,
they ran into some of our church members
that happened to be visiting their
storage unit as well.
The visitors were getting rid of a ton of fabric
and wanted to know if they could use it.
Guess who they thought of?
Along with the fabric was about 7 garbage bags
full of never used drop cloths.

Hearing about the donated drop cloth gold mine,
our VBS Leader, got online and found
some Nylon type number sacks with handles.
She brought them to me,
and asked if I could line them with the drop cloth
to make them stronger.

With my machines,
it was easy to sew.

Sewed down one side seam with my old 1980s serger.
She's been a good one.

Then surged across the top edge.

Serge down the other side
TOP to bottom.

Because I free hand cut,
and did not measure,
(you know I don't like to bother with measurements if possible)
I didn't expect the bottom to come out even.

 After both sides were surged,
the bottom was cut off evenly
across the bottom free handed.
Besides, this will be inside the bag
where it cannot be seen.

The bottom was surged together.

Bottom seam was turned once
and straight stitched
for reinforcement.

Not turning the drop cloth bag inside out,
and keeping the seams exposed,
the drop cloth bag
was slid inside the nylon bag
so the tops of each bag would match.

I started matching on each side seam.
Notice the reason for not turning the
drop cloth bag inside out.

The drop cloth bag was over cut with a generous seam,
so it wouldn't turn out too tight.
In the middle of the front and back
a clip was placed.
Then the leftover was pleated on each side
as shown below.

Starting at a handle,
I back stitched and triple stitched for strength.
That was done over each handle
and each pleat.

Then the drop cloth bag top edge was held
along the top edge of the nylon bag as shown
and stitched with a 2.5 length stitch.

VBS is ready to RACE!
