Tuesday Tutorial ~ Traveling Sewing Kit

 

My goal was to make a scissor holder for traveling.  Then it quickly became a sewing kit to hold my tools to make my hexies on my travels to Florida this past winter.

When I needed a traveling sewing kit, 

I was in the middle of making pot holders. 

So, I grabbed a potholder,

and sewed a long zipper around it.

Instead of cutting off the end of the zipper, 

I tacked it down to use as a handle.

Flipped over to hide the raw end.

Quilt Shot Block 130~ Abundant by Sewcialites (A Flower Block)

 

This free downloadable pattern can be found at "Sewcialites Quilt Along" going on now.

Its block #24 called Abundant.  

Directions are provided for 3, 6 and 9 inch squares.

This is supposed to be 6 inch block. 

Directions were easy and the pieces fit together perfectly. 

Then somehow I must have taken larger than quarter inch seam when sewing the 3 strips together?

Just in case you don't like to follow written instructions,

there is a You Tube tutorial with each one of these.

 

I made this one block to go into a baby quilt I'm making.

 

Thoughtful Thursday 172 ~ Something Makes You Laugh

 

When its one of those days when nothing seems to turn out right.......

Monday Memory 121 ~ Memories of Teaching Sewing Lessons

 

Last week I started teaching a sewing class again.  The experience is bringing back LOTS of sweet memories of past sewing classes.

I've taught sewing at the Christian Academy of the Bluegrass before and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can't tell me that God doesn't have his hand in all this work.  I've had 2 people to donate a lot of fabric and several people are letting us use their sewing machine so that students don't have to share machines like we did the first year.

Last week was preassessment. This week we get down to the work of learning how to use the machine. 

We plan to make Fidget Quilts.  Each square will involve a different sewing skill.

Tuesday Tutorial~ Envelope Pillow Cover

 

A neighbor needed a couple of patio pillows recovered.  

So she bought a yard of fabric. 

I made the envelope style covers. 

Super quick. 

Took less than an hour to make both.

 Cut a piece of fabric to match front of pillow plus a one half inch seam all around.

These pillows were 15 inch square.

 So cut a 15½ square which allows a quarter inch seam.

Use whatever your pillow measurement.

The two back pieces are 1/2 of width of pillow plus 3 inches or so.

You could use the length measurement if that is more appealing to design.

 

 

Double turn 1/4 inch along one edge and top stitch.

Lay the section you just top stitched right sides together on top of the square matching all the 3 sides.

Then lay the pieces with the selvage edge right side down on top of those 2 pieces matching all 3 sides.

If there isn't a piece with selvage edge, then turn edge under once and top stitch or serge or zig-zag edge to make as flat as possible edge.

Turn inside out through opening and straighten corners as much as possible.

The pillow is more pliable than the cover, so the cover can't be pulled over the pillow.  Instead, the pillow must be shoved, pushed, almost folded in half to go inside and go under the inside cover.

Almost like birthing in reverse.

I love this method because it doesn't have the added cost of a zipper,

and much faster than applying a zipper.

Fun Friday~ Faster Simple Deviled Eggs

 

While you're boiling those eggs to decorate for Easter, 

how many of you boil some extras to make Deviled Eggs,

 or some call them Dressed Eggs? 

 It's actually Mr. G's birthday,

 and this is one of his favorite things to eat that I make

 so he gets them on his birthday.  

 

Today I used my FAVORITE SIMPLE DEVILED EGGS recipe.

  I usually mix up the yoke filling then spoon it

into a zip bag to pipe into the egg whites. 

I also suggest add an extra tablespoon of mayo for creamier filling.

 

 ************************************************

 Today I had this idea.  

It sure was quicker especially when it came to CLEAN UP TIME.

Put a zip bag in a cup (container), 

then put all the filling ingredients in the bag.

Then give your hand some exercise squeezing the bag.

 

Cut a small piece off of a bottom corner and pipe the filling.

Then a sprinkle of paprika, of course.

 

Sorry green people, but I threw the bag away for quick clean up.

Maybe I'll consider cleaning zip bags when people start washing expensive coffee paper cups?
