Folder Holder

This past spring Mr. G's sister, Pam found some fabric that just screamed that it needed to go into Mr. G's Daughter's Kindergarten classroom.  I totally agreeded.  She asked if she sent it to me, would I use my classroom teacher mind to think of something needed in Daughter's classroom.  Even though I haven't visited her room, I know that something for organization is usually needed.  With Kindergarten, I had circle time in mind and a place for Daughter to store her read-aloud books and demo material for center time.  Of course it could be used in a center to present material, or store papers to be sent home as students walk out the door.

I searched around the net and found GYCT's version for making the folder holder.  I pretty much followed her directions.  Took me longer to calculate how to use ever inch of the 2 yds (I think it was.) I barely had a 1/4 inch strip left which was cut away because the fabric wasn't cut square.

I measured fabric to fit folders.
Pam also sent the binding which helped me use less material to make each pocket.
I recycled some heavy clear plastic to make the name pockets.
Used longer stitches so the plastic will not rip away easily.

The top of the name pocket was reinforced with 0 stitch length zig-zag.
I inserted labels so this "Folder Holder" could be used in the book center.
I also used the button hole/ribbon technique except I had just enough leftover binding to use for ribbon.
It could be hung on a hanger as seen here, or depending on weight can hang on magnetic hooks on the magnetic white board.

I presented our surprise gift to her recently in time for classes to start tomorrow.  She couldn't have gotten far down the road, before I saw she had posted a picture of it on Facebook, with a big Thank-you to her Aunt Pam and me.

I so hope it comes in handy for her and wears well.
Thank-you again GYCT for your tutorial!

  6. This is really cute. What a clever thing to reuse that clear vinyl from one of those bags that sheets, bedding, etc come in. I buy vinyl but haven't thought of using those. I made a holder thing similar to this several years ago for my kids school papers and important info they need to keep - clears up the counter.
