Quilt Shot Block 176~ Falling Star 4th of July Yard Flag

 

This pattern is free.

It is Moda Blockhead 5, Group 2, Block 23

It's named Falling Star.

 

The second I saw this pattern,

I knew it would make a great 4th of July Flag.

Turn it a complete 180 and it becomes a Shooting Star?

 

I cut the pieces.

Note only need three 2½ in white squares.

I mistakenly cut 4.

 

First, I started with the paper piece.

I use the "No Tear" Method.

This was actually the second time 

I used this same piece of paper

to make a second flag,

so I could learn my mistakes on the first.

The pattern is drawn on freezer paper, then

 folded on the lines

on the non-waxed side. 

Even though I used freezer paper

I still put 2 small pins in the first section

to make sure it doesn't slip out of place.

Fabrics are stitched together

by stitching as close to the edge of the fold as possible.

 

Then the best and fun part is this.

You don't have to take time to rip out paper.

Just remove the few pins used.

 

Then just take off the pattern.

Then use it again if need.

 

The first time I made this block,

I thought I was a Know-It-All, 

and didn't have to read directions

on putting the piece together.

So I put together the Eight Pointed Star together first.

As you see, it doesn't work that way

and that's why you only need three white 2½ inch squares. 

(and yes, Flying Geese could have been made.)

Thoughtful Thur~ Upcycled Wedding Dress Thank-you Card

 

When I do a sewing project

for family or close friend,

I do not like to charge them,

because they usually have or will

do something invaluable for me.

When my special friend

asked me how much she owed me

for making the Dressing Robe (last Mon's link)

I said, "Just have lunch with me."

Well, she's already done that.

Then, she surprised me with a "Side Winder" Bobbin threader.

I had thought multiple times of buying it, and had not, yet.

I don't know how she knew out of all the gadgets I do have,

I didn't have that one?

So, I then made her a Thank-you keepsake card of

the tiny scraps of her wedding dress

 I had in my trash can.

I mailed it,

even though she lives a few streets away.

Do you think "Thank-you" can become a continuous cycle?

Mon Memory~ Recycled Grandmother's Wedding Dress to Grand Daughter's Wedding Dressing Robe

The first rip was hardest.

Using the satin empire skirt part of the dress, 

was this many inches shorter

than the pattern from shoulder to bottom.

Leftover satin from empire skirt.

At this point, a hole was discovered in the sleeve.

Accidents like this help create design.

 

 

Underside

The back.

Didn't realize the "V" was happening.

Laying the bodice backward 

over the shoulder for thought?

Added scraps to the bottom.

Attaching shear/lace to satin at shoulder and arm areas.

At this point, 

I had not caught my mistake.

I do see the mistake above, but

still looking at the picture below I don't see it wrong.

At this point I decided

to go ahead and hand stitch

the bodice.

The front was stitched on the back

and the back draped onto the front.

I did not take the bodice apart at the shoulder.

It was kept in one piece.

My mistake?

AFTER, I hand stitched the old bodice

on the back and front

over the shoulder,

 I discovered the shear was turned wrong side out,

so the lace was on the inside!

Instead of unstitching everything

including where they were joined at 

shoulder and arm,

I cut along the top lace line

turned it around and

stitched back on.

Then stitched on the sleeves.

Three quarter length

so they don't get in the way of dressing.

 

 

Back

Decided a belt and tie

were needed

to make sure it fit any size.

So I used the satin scraps 

by cutting into strips.

Wished I could have made belt wider.

Completed

Right after I had been asked

to do this project,

I was about to dig into my old patterns

to hack.

Then I came upon a Hobby Lobby close out sale

and got this pattern for 99¢.

It was the perfect guide,

even down to the sleeves. 

 

I didn't get back pictures of her standing

in the robe.

Here is what I was sent.

My pay back always includes pictures please.

I'm told this robe is to be used by

the second grand daughter, maybe next year?

btw.....if you want a glimpse of the wedding dress.

I didn't know what it would look like.

 Wonder if her dress will turn into a robe for memories.
